Windows Operating System
Windows Operating System is a graphical user interface (GUI)-based operating system (OS) developed and manufactured by Microsoft Corporation. It was first introduced in November 1985 with the introduction of Microsoft Windows 1.0 model. From then, it became the most extensively installed operating system used primarily for both the desktop and laptop computers. The system usually runs on an x86-based CPUs for personal computers and servers. This closed source model also offers extensive desktop environment with a full networking support.
Windows Operating System was initially conceptualized for IBM Personal Computer (PC)-compatibles in Intel x86 structural design. It serves both the client and server editions.
The initial phase of Version 1.0 (Microsoft Windows' first independent Operating System version) in 1985, further intensifies MS-DOS' dominance in the market. However, it did not complete the entire OS structure. This led Microsoft to further developed a true user-friendly operating system.
The Windows Operating System has 13 existing versions. These are the Windows 1.0 (introduced in 1985 with a 16-bit word size), Windows 2.0/286/386 (launched in 1987 and pioneered the DOS multitasking function), Windows 3.0 (started in 1990 and established the first ever popular version of Windows), Windows 3.1 (initiated in 1992 and supplemented the peer-to-peer networking system), Windows 95 (commenced in 1995 and became the earliest 32-bit Windows operating system), Windows 98 (established in 1998 and incorporated the Internet Explorer browser with the OS), Windows ME (created in 2000 and provided the improvement of Windows 98), Windows NT (started in 1993 as a networking tool), Windows 2000 (established in 2000 as an upgrade to Windows NT 4), and the Windows XP (introduced in 2001 and employs two versions the Home and Professional).
In 2006, Microsoft will introduce Windows XP's successor, the Windows Vista (also known as the "Longhorn"). It will become the next generation Windows Operating System for client and server applications.
